Interventions are of course easiest with raid-capable cultures and religions but other groups can keep a stable of excess siblings, children, and grandkids around to throw at people so that you can offer to join their war as well. Sometimes I might engage my target's forces and cut them down to size so the guy I'm defending is able to defeat their enemy. Maybe it's enough to give to the other guy a chance to regroup and reform and either win on his own terms or at least white peace out. I usually play raiding cultures so intervening is as simple as landing a force in the territory of the guy I want to lose and waiting until he breaks off his assault on his own war target and starts chasing me around.
I may not be the strongest actor around but with the small to midsize kingdom I usually build in such a situation I am more than capable of tipping the balance one way or the other. For instance, one of my favorite styles of play recently has been to be a kind of background manipulator and interventionist. Once you do that, you can essentially let the game keep producing content for you. To remedy this, i came up with the idea of placing certain limitations on myself and striving not so much to dominate every single neighboring power but instead to create a niche and preserve it. Once you're too powerful, the AI simply has no way of reliably destabilizing you and containing your threat.
A big part of of the game's fun for me is certainly acting on otter characters and realms but the ability for the AI to act on me in turn in unpredictable ways in also a key part of this.
However, I have tons of ideas for playing in a non-expansionist manner!Ī lot of my boredom with the blobbing playstyle stems from simply growing too strong proportionally to my neighbors. Well, playing without utilizing warfare to some extent, or at least raiding, can be difficult to maintain long-term.
